Bird Colouring Social Club
The Bird Colouring Social Club is a heartwarming and community-focused art event that aims to bring people together in a shared art space. Celebrating the significance of birds in Singapore’s post-independence years of the 60s and 70s, where bird-singing clubs flourished as a popular pastime in the heartlands, the event holds nostalgic value for the local community. Participants are invited to color iconic bird species like the Zebra Dove, Bulbul, and the ‘Serangoon Bird’ on paper, adding their artistic touch to these beloved creatures. The interactive aspect of the event allows attendees to release their 3D bird designs into a digital aviary on-site, creating a virtual space that symbolizes the collective spirit of the community.
Originally commissioned for the National Arts Council’s Arts In Your Neighbourhood, the success of The Bird Colouring Social Club has led to its recurring presence at various locations, including Braddell Heights Community Hub, Marine Terrace, Jurong Lake Gardens, Central Library, Jurong West Library, and Library@Harbourfront. With almost 5000 unique birds, this further strengthens bonds within the neighborhood through the joy of art and cultural connections.
